The Beauty of An Open Plan Design

5 August 2022

The best of both worlds where functionality, design and lifestyle meet.

Love the idea of an open plan space?

It’s one of the top considerations for people in the new home market today, and in particular, it’s a priority for those looking to knock down and rebuild. Open plan living spaces generally incorporate the kitchen, main family/living room and dining areas into one shared space. In addition, these spaces should flow seamlessly through to the outdoors to provide the perfect indoor and outdoor living blend.

It’s a design philosophy that aligns with our relaxed Australian lifestyle.

Open plan layouts look beautiful and are ultrapractical for everyday living and entertaining guests and friends. However, it wasn’t always this way. Home life was usually split into separate compartments in-home layouts from days gone by. The kitchen was where the meals were prepared and dishes cleaned and not much more than that, whilst dining rooms and lounges were often seen as formal places, closed off from the rest of the home.

This style certainly had its charms; much of this design ethos stemmed from keeping homes warm and the day’s cultural norms. However, fast forward half a century or so, and life has changed a lot. Whilst we still appreciate the warmth and the feel of a traditionally styled home, what we want from our spaces has evolved.

We now see families interacting with their spaces quite differently. For example, butlers are now strictly optional when including a Butler’s pantry in a new home design. Furthermore, The Island bench is not just for preparing food but is a place to gather, chat, and enjoy a glass of wine whilst the chef prepares a lovely meal. This design layout allows for connectivity. The multiple-purpose open space enables mum and dad to cook while the kids do their homework.

It’s communal, it’s inviting, and it’s far more social than days gone by.
