Double-Storey Homes

Double-storey home checklist

We all love the look of a grand double-storey home. But the question is, while you love the design, does it suit your lifestyle?

Building a double-storey home can be a great choice if you are on a sloping block or any tricky plot of land, where building up will be easier than building broader or longer in a single-storey.

However, it is crucial to consider how you and your family will use the space. What kind of life do you live? If you have teenagers or young kids, this may play a part in considering a double-storey home. As teenagers may like their own retreat away from the family on the second storey, however, you may prefer having your young kids just down the hall, which is achievable in a single-storey home.

Some things you should consider in building your double-storey home:

1. Consider your budget

Budget will influence the options available to you in designing your home. So ensure you know what your budget is.

Understanding what you have to spend will allow us to guide you in what’s achievable in terms of design, size, and features you can include in your new home.

Our team will chat with you more holistically about where money needs to be spent on a new build, both in terms of the pretty things and, importantly, the non-glamourous things like foundations and site-related works, demolitions and services where applicable as well.

We’ll also consider things you may need for your home, like your curtains and landscaping etc., and help you budget for these items within your overall figure.

From there, we will have a great base to start designing your dream double-storey home.

2. What do you love about a double-storey home?

Make sure you consider what draws you to double-storey homes. Is it the scale, size, the ability to allow for multigenerational living, extra space, or just the overall look and feel?

Knowing what draws you to this particular home style will allow us to develop the right design for your family.

Looking for heaps of space? Sometimes it’s simply the scale and size of a double-storey that appeals.

Multigenerational living is also a real consideration for many families. A double-storey may allow for flexibility in a design to enable a family to share a home and have some space for themselves.

Freeing up some space for the kids to run around or to have a nice garden are other reasons some choose to go up when building. In an era where land sizes are reducing and space is at a premium, sometimes the option to go up is the right one when it provides that open space many crave when chasing the great Australian dream.

3. How will you live in the home?

Consider how your family will live in the home if you enjoy communal areas for family time or separated spaces to allow each person their own sanctuary. Do you want to have to yell upstairs to let the kids know dinner is ready? These are all things to consider when choosing your floorplan and type of home.

Once you’ve decided that double-storey living is for you, we want you to imagine life in the home and consider a layout that will enhance your lifestyle and provide the spaces with your family’s needs.

From teenagers that may need more oversized bedrooms, breakout spaces and additional storage to parents that are finding themselves working from home on a more regular basis and may need a dedicated home office to hide away and get things done. We think not only about what spaces your family needs but also where in the design they’ll make the most sense.

4. On the fence?

Have you considered an attic home if you can’t choose between a single or double-storey home? A unique option, attic homes offer a great combination of the expansive floorplans of single-storey homes with the grand allure of a double-storey. They look beautiful, provide you with the additional space you may be seeking, and even save you 50-60m² off the ground floor, allowing you to have a larger backyard.

We understand that the options are endless, and we know how much this home will mean to you, so we guide you through every step of the process. No questions are too small, and no problem is too big.
